Learn to navigate /map read (beginner and intermediate)

Our Navigation courses are based either in the North Yorkshire moors or in the Lake District national park. If you’ve done some hill walking but don't feel confident navigating or you haven't navigated at all, our two day beginner’s navigation course on the North Yorkshire moors will give you plenty of practice and a great start. If you have done some navigating already but would like to learn more or perhaps you struggle in poor visibility conditions such as low cloud or mist then this 2 day Map-reading course will provide you with the knowledge and practice to give you more confidence in those daunting navigational situations. You’ll get plenty of opportunities to practice these new skills on a variety of terrain in both the North Yorkshire Moors and in the Lake District.

This course is for anyone who ventures out into the hills, but is not confident of their ability to reliably navigate in poor conditions. You should have a basic knowledge of map reading, including following linear features and basic use of compass. Candidates will usually be in groups according to their experience and aspirations but more intensive one to one tailor made courses can be arranged. It is also possible for those planning on doing a MLTE Mountain Leader assessment to do a practice refresher day by arrangement.
