Winter Skills


The winter is a fantastic playground if you have the skills and knowledge to deal with the terrain and situations that arise in the winter hills. Join our course to have a fun and informative experience while learning to use crampons and ice axe with a group of likeminded people. The winter skills course is run over 2 days and is based in the Cairngorms, Scotland. The aim for this course is to give you the skills and confidence you'll need to tackle winter walking days whether it is in the Scottish Highland, The Lake District or on the moors. During the course we will teach you how and when to use crampons, techniques for walking on steeper slopes, ice axe arrest, step cutting, avalanche awareness and route choice skills. No previous winter experience is needed for our winter skills course however, you will need a degree of hill fitness to get the most out of the program. Winter skills day 1: Winter skills including walking on snow and ice, using crampons, step cutting, ice axe braking and basic avalanche awareness. Winter skills day 2: Mountain journey including more detailed avalanche awareness, route choice, emergency snow shelters and applying the skills learnt on day 1.

Keen summer hill walkers who want to enjoy the delights of walking in the mountains in winter would find this course the ideal foundation to build skills and boost confidence. You must be a minimum of 18 years old at the commencement of the course
